Airport express isn't working

If the Express was originally set up to connect to the AirPort Extreme using a wireless connection, and you later connected an Ethernet cable to the Express.......that creates a huge feedback loop that effectively crashes the network provided by the Express.

You will need to start over and reset the Express back to factory default settings, then set it up again.

If you want the Express to connect permanently at all times to the Extreme using an Ethernet cable, then you must establish that connection before you set up the Express again. The Ethernet cable cannot ever be disconnected.

If you want the Express to wirelessly extend the network, then you will not use an Ethernet cable at all during the setup.

Unfortunately, I do not have an Xbox on hand to test the settings in the User Tip by Tesserax.

Fortunately, Tesserax is a regular contributor here on the forum, and I am sure that he will answer when he sees this post.

In the meantime, it would help if you could find out whether the settings that you changed on the AirPort Extreme are working correctly.

To do that, as a test, connect the Xbox directly to one of the LAN<--> Ethernet ports on the AirPort Extreme and see if the Xbox is working that way.

If it is, then we can continue to troubleshoot the AirPort Express.

But, if the Xbox is not working correctly during your test, then we'll have to back track and figure out what the issue might be with the AirPort Extreme before we can troubleshoot the AirPort Express.

Obviously, if the AirPort Extreme is not working correctly, then neither will the AirPort Express work correctly.

I am assuming that you are saying that you are still not able to get an "Open NAT" status with your Xbox even when connected directly to the AirPort Extreme ... correct?

You also mentioned that you have made "port settings" as well. If you have configured the Extreme for port mapping, then you will NOT get to an Open NAT status. You must configure the Extreme to place the Xbox in a DMZ. With port mapping, at best, your Xbox should report a "Moderate NAT" for connection status.

No, setting up port mapping on the Extreme or DHCP reservations should not affect the base station's ability to provide connectivity via Ethernet for either base station ... as long as both are configured properly.

How they are configured for an extended network will depend on if they are interconnected by Ethernet or by wireless.

According to your last reply to Bob, your Xbox is not getting connectivity when connected directly to the Extreme by Ethernet ... so the troubleshooting should start there.

However, I would first suggest that you try connecting another computer to the Extreme's Ethernet port to rule out the Xbox's Ethernet interface as being bad.

... and I'm sure you already tried each of the LAN ports on the Extreme, as well as, using another known good Ethernet cable ... correct?

If that is the case, and the results are the same, then there may be something amiss with the Extreme's built-in Ethernet switch.

The earlier v5.x of the AirPort Utility allowed you to change the Ethernet settings on the base station's WAN port, but this feature was removed with the newer 6.x utility.

Do you have access to a Mac or PC that can run v5.x of the AirPort Utility? If so, you can try using that to try different combinations of WAN Ethernet settings to see if that helps.

If not, then try temporarily substituting your AirPort Express for the Extreme. Then connect one of your wired clients to the Express to check if there is any improvement for the Ethernet connection.

If this still does not solve the problem, then it may be the modem that's the culprit.
